The Room Next Door

Spain | 2024 | English | 110 min. | d.s.

In Almodóvar's first English-language feature, scripted by himself and adapted from the novel What Are You Going Through, we experience a layered and characteristic Almodóvar film.

Ingrid (Julianne Moore) learns that an old friend, Martha (Tilda Swinton), is dying of cancer. The two women share a joyful reunion in Martha’s private hospital room, where the shadow of death adds depth to their exchange of feelings and memories. Martha asks Ingrid for a favor: to accompany her to a house she has rented in upstate New York and stay with her during her final days. She has obtained a “death pill” and wants Ingrid nearby—in the room next door—when she chooses to end her life.

Moore and Swinton are excellent in delivering a powerful mix of warmth and neuroses, sensitivity, fragility, and wisdom.
