Tasting Contrasts

Dutch Caribbean | doc | 2025 | 15 min.

Film unites many forms of art on the screen. For CIFF ’25 it was decided to focus, among other forms, on the visual arts. Renowned painter Rembrandt, like many other masters, depicted the five senses. However, one of these works, the image of taste, has never been found. Through a competition by CIFF and Landhuis Bloemhof, artists were challenged to create their own interpretation of the sense of taste. A jury consisting of 3 art professionals finally chose a winner.

This documentary follows the winning artist reinterpreting Rembrandt’s lost work ‘The Sense of Taste’. It captures the creative process and the emotional depth of art. Intimate visuals and natural light highlight the nuances of painting. Sounds, such as brushstrokes and silence, enhance the atmosphere. Interviews explore the artist’s background, inspirations, and Rembrandt’s influence. The film connects historical and modern art. It provides an in-depth look at artistic choices, challenges, and the significance of reinterpretation in contemporary art.
