11th edition CIFF – 9-13 April 2025

Sugar Island

Dominican Republic, Spain | 2024 | Haitian, Spanish | 91 min. | e.s.

This ravishing debut feature by Johanné Gómez Terrero makes full use of its kaleidoscopic aesthetic to explore a deep well of interconnected themes.

Mayenka is a teenager living on a sugar plantation with her mother and grandfather. After a night out, she becomes pregnant. To this personal crisis, the family adds another: the company for which her grandfather has worked for forty years plans to expel him from his modest house while paying him a laughable pension.

The film blends different genres: social realism, theatrical performance, documentary, and dream-like scenes that evoke a spiritual world, which forms the basis of local beliefs and practices. Keeping the focus on Mayenka, the story weaves together the personal and the collective.
