Santosh

United Kingdom, India | 2024 | Hindi | 128 min. | e.s.

A masterful and intricately woven Hindi police procedural, Santosh exposes the dark realities of communal divisions in modern India. The story follows Santosh, a driven young woman who, newly widowed, inherits her late husband’s position as a police officer through a government policy known as “compassionate appointment”. A regulation that allows women to assume the jobs of their deceased spouses.

The plot unfolds with the tragic death of a young girl who is raped, murdered, and discarded in a local well, setting the stage for institutionalized misogyny, police brutality, caste violence, and bureaucratic red tape. The camera remains closely focused on Santosh, capturing her every move and moment of introspection. The cast features a mix of professional actors and non-actors, all of whom bring authenticity and rawness to their performances. The result is a gripping and deeply engaging film that shines a light on societal issues while remaining eminently watchable.
