Quand vient l’automne

A perfect actor’s film set in an intimate film noir. Michelle, now retired, lives a secluded life in a quiet French village near her best friend Marie-Claude. Visits from her grandson Lucas are the true highlights of her days. After a lunch where Michelle apparently served poisonous mushrooms, her daughter Valérie forbids her from seeing Lucas again. Everything changes when Marie-Claude’s son is released from prison.

Ozon avoids spectacle, instead dropping subtle hints about the tension between Michelle and her daughter Valérie, the secret shared between Michelle and Marie-Claude, and leaves the viewer guessing with Hitchcockian suspense. A slow-burning thriller where a raised eyebrow, so to speak, has more impact than a drawn gun. With lead roles played by Hélène Vincent (81) as Michelle and Josiane Balasko (74) as Marie-Claude, the director also pays homage to older actresses, who, in his view, are becoming increasingly invisible in today’s film industry.
