Poison

Luxembourg, Netherlands | 2024 | English | 89 min. | d.s.

Based on the award-winning play by Dutch writer Lot Vekemans*, a scheme by a cemetery to relocate 200 graves, including that of their tragically and young deceased son Jacob, brings a divorced couple back together. In this intimate chamber piece set in a deserted cemetery chapel, an intriguing and emotionally charged conversation unfolds about the aftermath of their sudden loss. Lucas (Tim Roth) and Edith (Trine Dyrholm) deliver outstanding performances as a couple reunited years after tragedy tore them apart. Their memories may be heaven, hell or both. This brief but intense meeting brings pain and resentments to the surface but also a reminder of cherished intimacies and love they once shared.

The sadness is not only visible but also palpable to the viewer. It is grief in its purest form. The predominantly gray autumnal images blend seamlessly with the melancholic tone of the film.
