Small Things Like These

Ireland | 2024 | English | 98 min. | d.s.

The film, adapted from the Booker Prize-nominated novel by Claire Keegan, reveals the truth about Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries. These horrific asylums operated from the 1820s until 1996, established to reform “fallen young women” who were forced into unpaid labor. The film takes place during Christmas 1985, when devoted father and hard-working coal merchant Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy) discovers startling secrets kept by the convent in his town. Both the convent’s Mother Superior and the local pub owner advise Bill not to speak out about what’s going on at the convent. The nuns’ social influence could prevent Bill’s young daughters from attending school.

Top performances by Cillian Murphy, Eileen Walsh, Emily Watson, Helen Behan, and Clare Dunne.
