Little Richard: I Am Everything

USA | 2023 | doc | English | 101 min. | d.s.

The documentary explores the extraordinary life of the “Architect of Rock ‘n’ Roll”. From his groundbreaking 1950s recordings, Little Richard (aka Richard Wayne Penniman) revolutionized music with his electrifying performances and flamboyant style. He grew up in a family of 12 children. His father was a church deacon, nightclub owner, and moonshine bootlegger. The film examines his journey as a gay, Black performer in the segregated South, capturing his struggle between Saturday night’s “Tutti Frutti” and Sunday morning’s gospel preaching. More than once, he abandoned the stage for church and vice versa.

Through a wealth of rare footage and interviews, the documentary reveals his influence on rock legends like Elvis Presley and The Beatles, who once opened for him in Hamburg. Little Richard’s pioneering artistry transcended racial and social barriers, inspiring generations of musicians from Bruno Mars to Lady Gaga.
