A young man, Jérémie (Félix Kysyl), returns to his sleepy hometown of Saint Martial for the funeral of a local baker for whom he once worked. He meets Vincent (Jean-Baptiste Durand), who is not particularly thrilled about Jérémie’s unexpected return, especially when his widowed mother (Catherine Frot) invites Jérémie to stay with her. It soon becomes clear that the former childhood friends share a past that Vincent would rather not revisit. A fight between the two ends with Vincent’s murder in a nearby forest.

The church, represented by Father Grisolles (Jacques Develay), and the government, represented by two ineffectual gendarmes, add to this parade of slippery and elusive characters.

Director Alain Guiraudie has crafted a cleverly structured thriller with a darkly comedic undertone, where repressed desires simmer beneath the surface, adding layers of intrigue and complexity. The male protagonists present themselves as heterosexual, while an undercurrent of homoerotic tension is unmistakably present.
