11th edition CIFF – 9-13 April 2025

Memory

Usa, Mexico | 2024 | English | 100 min. | d.s.

Sylvia (Jessica Chastain) works at a public home in New York for adults struggling with mental health conditions. She leads a simple and structured life: her daughter, her job, her AA meetings. She meets Saul (Peter Sarsgaard) when he follows her home after their high school reunion and finds him drenched and freezing on her doorstep the next morning. This unexpected encounter opens a door to their shared past, profoundly affecting both of them.

Chastain’s portrayal of Sylvia’s emotional journey allows the audience to experience her confusion and fear as she confronts both her past and present. Sarsgaard as Peter brings an enigmatic character that complicates Sylvia’s recovery. His alluring and threatening presence enhances the film’s exploration of human relationships. Michel Franco’s direction keeps viewers engaged throughout the film.

Note: Memory was initially selected as the opening film for CIFF ’24. However, the screening rights were not available then for Curaçao.
