Lee offers a compelling, partial biographical portrayal of American model-turned-war-photographer Lee Miller (Kate Winslet). Miller defied societal expectations to forge her own path during tumultuous times. The film juxtaposes her glamorous days as a model with the grim realities of World War II battlefields. Miller, who mastered photography both in front of and behind the lens, made significant contributions to both the art and journalism worlds. She captured the details of combat in ways often overlooked by her male counterparts. Alongside her friend and colleague David Scherman (Andy Samberg), Miller was among the first civilians to document the horrors of Nazi concentration camps. What she witnessed at Buchenwald and Dachau left an indelible mark on her, haunting her for the rest of her life.

The film’s cinematography vividly contrasts the vibrant colors of pre-war life with the stark grays of post-war Germany, mirroring Lee’s shifting mental state throughout her journey.
