Lanta para watapana

Curaçao, Netherlands | 1974 | 23 min | Dutch (Also Papiaments version) | n.s.

A program about Wilbert Tecla (1938-1987) was a long-standing wish of the CIFF. But where were his films? They were eventually found in the archives of Sound & Vision, the institute that also manages the Sticusa archive.

Lanta para watapana – the title is taken from a poem by Henri Habibe – presents a cinematic ode to the landscape of the Leeward Islands. Through the industrial revolution (such as harbor construction, shipbuilding, and refineries), forests were cut down and water was diverted from fertile areas, leading to both physical and mental erosion. A solution is education, reforestation, and more agriculture. Dutch narration and adaptation: Sherman de Jesus; Papiamentu adaptation: Frank Martinus Arion.

With introduction by Lex Veerkamp.

Our Lost & Found program presents the following 4 short films: Lanta para watapana, Mosaiko Kultural, Caribbean Eyewitness Accounts of WWII, Tasting Contrasts.
