Invisible Beauty

USA | 2024 | doc | 111 min | English | d.s.

Invisible Beauty chronicles the life and legacy of top model and fashion icon Bethann Hardison. While today racial diversity and inclusion are celebrated in the fashion industry, the world Hardison entered was homogenous and predominantly white. Discovered by a fashion designer, Hardison found success but quickly noticed the disparities: white models earned more and were treated with greater respect. This inequality led her to establish her own modeling agency and co-found the Black Girls Coalition with fellow icon Iman.

The film portrays Hardison as a determined and complex figure; fabulous and flawed. Her son, Kadeem Hardison, wistfully comments on her emotional absence and cold support, while Naomi Campbell tearfully describes her as a mother figure. Through intimate interviews with colleagues, friends, family, and Hardison herself, the documentary highlights the origins and legacy of a woman who paved the way for a new generation of fashion activists.
