Firebrand is a historical drama based on the novel “Queen’s Gambit” by Elizabeth Fremantle. The film focuses on Katherine Parr (Alicia Vikander), the sixth wife of King Henry VIII (Jude Law), who is appointed regent while the king leads his army in France. Set within the intrigue-filled Tudor court, the story centers on the tense relationship between the king and his final queen. Alicia Vikander delivers a commanding performance as Katherine, portraying her transformation from a dutiful wife to a formidable political player. Jude Law’s depiction of Henry VIII is equally compelling, capturing the character’s complexity as he navigates between charm and tyranny. Henry’s paranoia casts a shadow over their relationship, as Katherine is both in favor with the king and suspected of harboring radical religious sympathies.

The film’s strength lies in its exploration of the inner lives of its characters, particularly in the context of female empowerment during a time when this was hardly possible.
