Terms & Conditions

General

1. The Organizer of the competition is Curaçao International Film Festival Rotterdam (CIFFR).
2. Entering this competition means that you agree to all the terms and conditions relating to this competition.
3. By entering this competition, you declare that the film you submit complies with the competition rules and that the information provided is complete, true, and accurate.
4. This competition is free to enter and is open to residents of: Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St Eustatius, St Maarten (part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands), and Suriname. Further entries are those selected by the cooperating film festivals as mentioned in article 1. under Judging and Awards. Those involved in its organization, judges and their immediate family are excluded from participating in this competition. The Organizer reserves the right to request evidence of residency of any entrant.
5. By entering this competition, entrants agree to indemnify CIFFR, its staff and directors, attorneys, agents and representatives, and affiliates, against any and all third party liability for any injuries, loss, claim, action, demand or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with the competition (collectively, “Losses”), including without limitation any third party claim for copyright infringement or a violation of an individual’s right to privacy and/or publicity right.
6. Each Entrant in the competition is responsible for ensuring that he/she has the right to enter the film that he/she enters to the competition per these rules.
7. Entries on behalf of another person will not be accepted and joint entries are not allowed.
8. The film entered into the competition must not have a release date prior to 1 July 2019.
9. Entry period runs from 1 November 2019 to 2 February 2020. The closing date will be at midnight (Curaçao time) on 2 February 2020 and any entries received after this time will not be considered for the competition.
10. All entries are sent at the entrants’ risk. CIFFR regrets that it cannot accept any kind of liability for any loss or damage of any material entered in the competition (howsoever caused) nor for any other loss or damage resulting therefrom.
11. CIFFR reserves the right to cancel this competition or alter the rules at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, and if circumstances arise outside of its control. If so it will be done in a written statement from CIFFR.
12. Any breach of these terms by an Entrant will void their entry. CIFFR reserves the right to request the return of a prize if, at a later date, the Entrant has been discovered to be in breach of these terms.

Copyright and reproduction

1. The copyright of the entire film must belong to the Entrant.
2. Entrant retains the copyright of the submitted film. By entering the competition, all Entrants grant CIFFR the right to screen their film during the festival, to publish the film on the CIFFR YouTube channel and/or to use the film or stills from the film in any of its publicity, including, but not limited to, its magazine, marketing materials, newsletters, posters, and on its website and social media. Entries may also be retained and used for the CIFFR library. No fees will be payable for any of the above uses. Entrants whose film are one of the finalists or runners-up also agree to take part in post-competition publicity. While we will make every effort to credit the maker(s), we cannot guarantee this.
3. Media will be allowed to publish (images from) winning films free of charge for the purpose of promoting the competition without express permission from the Entrant. The media is responsible for crediting the maker(s) for any (still) images used by them.
4. Third parties will not be granted permission to use (images from) the film for other purposes without express permission from the maker(s).

Specifications

1. Each participant may only enter one (1) film. Entry is done through the online entry form at curacaoiffr.com and by giving the (password protected) Vimeo or Youtube link of the film.
2. The film must be at least (three) 3 minutes and max. twentyfive (25) minutes in length including credits. If the dialogue is not in English, the film must have English subtitles.
3. The film must be submitted in MOV H264 – 23.97 fps 720p or 1080p aspect 16:9 format. Entrants must keep their original material in the original format in case the film is screened during the festival.
4. You must have explicit, legal rights to use the music included in your film and include proof of those rights. Pending rights requests, usage in other YouTube videos, and/or claiming fair use are not acceptable. If you both wrote and performed the music in your film then a true statement to that effect including you as writer(s) and performer(s) will be sufficient.Entrant is responsible for entering the correct and full information of titles of music used and holding and entering the correct and full copyright information regarding music used in the film. CIFFR reserves the right to not post or remove an entry from the YouTube channel if this information is not complete or lacking.

Subjects and ethics

1. Any submitted film must not contain obscene, racist, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content. The Organizer reserves the right to disqualify and/or remove any films that it, at its own discretion, deems inappropriate.
2. Commercial or promotional films as well as music videos are excluded from participation.

Judging and awards

1. From all entries from Aruba, Curacao, St Maarten, BES islands and Suriname, one (1) film will be selected by a jury to continue in the competition and, together with the film entries from each of the six (6) collaborating festivals, be nominated for the Caribbean Shorts Award. Thus, a total of seven (7) films will be in competition for the Award. An international jury will select the winner of the Caribbean Shorts Award 2019. The winning film will be screened at all six collaborating festivals, namely: Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de la Havana (Cuba), Festival de Cine Global Dominicano (Dominican Republic), Festival Regional et International du Cinema de Guadeloupe, Rencontres Cinema Martinique, Morelia International Film Festival (Mexico), and Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival.
2. The Caribbean Shorts Award is personal and non-transferable. Any of the activities associated with the prize, cannot be exchanged for cash.
3. If the Organizer is unable to contact the winner(s) after reasonable (3) attempts have been made, the Organizer reserves the right to offer the prize to a runner-up.
4. The Organizer’s decision on all matters relating to the competition is final, and no correspondence will be entered into concerning the competition’s judging and organization.
5. Should the quality of entries fall below the standard required, the Organizer reserves the right not to award any prizes. Such decisions shall be unchallengeable.

Timeline

1. Entry period begins on 1 November 2019 and closes at midnight (Curaçao time) of 2 February 2020.
2. The Caribbean Shorts Award winner will be announced during the Award Ceremony on Saturday, 25 April 2020.
