Boléro

France, Italy | 1967 | 101 min | French | e.s.

Boléro offers a free interpretation of the life of Maurice Ravel (1875–1937). Raphaël Personnaz stars as Ravel, navigating his most famous composition and the strong women who surrounded him. Ironically, Ravel himself didn’t much like Boléro, the piece that would bring him the most fame. Commissioned by Ida Rubinstein (Jeanne Balibar) – a socialite, ballerina, muse, and actress – Boléro proved a challenge to compose. Inspiration came gradually, with the iconic sound ultimately rooted in 18th-century Spanish dance music. The result is a simple yet refined masterpiece.

Ravel is portrayed as an elegant, shy, and introverted man with a sharp sense of humor and self-awareness. Raphaël Personnaz delivers a wry and sympathetic performance, bringing gentle pity to the role. In one poignant moment near the end of his life, Ravel listens to a recording of Boléro on the radio and softly wonders: “Did I really write that? It wasn’t bad.”
