Ana Endara’s marvelous feature debut, set in Panama City. Ana María is a pregnant Colombian immigrant, without a visa or money. She dutifully works in elder care but remains isolated from the outside world. One day, she is hired to care for the well-off, dementia-stricken matriarch Mercedes (played by acclaimed Chilean actress Paulina García, known for her role in Gloria). Initially, their relationship is strained, but as the older woman’s health deteriorates, she opens her heart. The two seemingly different souls find a shared understanding of each other’s feelings – and a shared secret.

Featuring extraordinary performances, lush sound design, and a rich, evocative visual language that revels in detail, Beloved Tropic is a contained and delicately crafted personal drama.
