Banel & Adama is the debut feature from French-Sengalese writer-director Ramata-Toulaye Sy. A heartbreaking love story set in a remote village in northern Senegal. Fate strikes when Banel's husband falls into a well and dies.

According to tradition, his brother Adama must take his place. This is a welcome turn of events for Banel, who has been in love with Adama since childhood. As the two become increasingly inseparable, Adama begins to relinquish his duties as village leader, which causes dissension within the village council Banel & Adama is a timeless and enchanting love story, reminiscent of the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet. The beautiful imagery and poignant moments are within the tradition of African cinema. The movie offers important insights into community, the role of women, and the climate crisis.
