Anora

USA | 2024 | 139 min | English | d.s.

Sean Baker, well-known to CIFF audiences for The Florida Project, returns with Anora, a Palme d’Or-winning film that is equal parts screwball Cinderella tale and edgy Pretty Woman.

The story follows Anora (Mikey Madison), known as Ani, a young sex worker whose life takes a dramatic turn when she meets and marries Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn), the immature and trouble-prone son of a Russian billionaire. However, their union sparks outrage among Vanya’s parents, who dispatch henchmen to annul the marriage. Unbeknownst to them, Ani has more resilience, determination, and fighting spirit than anyone could have anticipated.

Anora is a whirlwind of energy, seamlessly blending emotions ranging from sweetness to toughness, hilarity to fury, without missing a beat. Sean Baker crafts pure cinematic magic, weaving clever twists and turns that will make you laugh and cry in equal measure. The film beautifully juxtaposes comedy with tragedy, delivering a richly layered and unforgettable experience.
