MASTERCLASS JAN DE BONT

Curaçao IFFR is honored to welcome a special guest on Thursday 26 March: Dutch cinematographer, director, and producer Jan de Bont.

After his study at the Film Academy of Amsterdam, De Bont first became known to the general public with his special camerawork for the Dutch classic Turkish Delight (Paul Verhoeven, 1973). The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and was pronounced Best Dutch Film of the Century in 1992. The successful cooperation with director Paul Verhoeven was continued for several other films, among which The Fourth Man (1983) and, after they had both settled in Hollywood, Basic Instinct (1992).

De Bont is praised worldwide for this his colorful and fast moving camera style. In large-scale action films he shows to be a master in filming explosions, stunts, and action scenes in films such as in Die Hard (1988), The Hunt for Red October (1990), and Lethal Weapon 3 (1991).

In 1994, De Bont made his debut as director with the Hollywood blockbuster Speed, followed two years later by Twister, an action film full of special effects about a tornado.

In this Masterclass, De Bont tells about his work as a cameraman, a director and a producer by showing film clips from this extensive oeuvre. A unique event for every film lover!
