Festival film November: Philomena

The second film in the series of monthly festival screenings was this year’s festival Surprise film.

Philomena, a British drama/comedy directed by Stephen Frears starring Dame Judi Dench and comedian Steve Coogan, was nominated for three Globe Awards and four Academy Awards and has won various awards.

Philomena is based on the true story of Philomena Lee, who, as an unmarried pregnant teenager in a strict Catholic Ireland, was sent away to a convent by way of punishment. There she gives birth to a boy, Anthony. In exchange for hard work, Philomena is allowed to stay in the convent for three more years and provide for her son. Against Philomena’s wishes her son is taken away from her and adopted by an American couple. Fifty years later she finally reveals her secret to her daughter who in turn asks journalist Martin Sixsmith to help find Anthony.

The alternation between the comic and profound conversations between Martin and Philomena, give the film not only an emotional but also a lighthearted, comic touch.

Philomena is screened daily at The Cinemas for two weeks, starting Thursday 13 November at 17:15 and 19:30.
