Winner Yellow Robin Award 2016 Announced
5 April 2016

On the 4th day of the CIFFR lustrum edition, the Awards were handed out.

The jury, consisting of Bero Beyer (director IFFR), Lisa Cortes (producer Cortes Films), and Maureen de Haseth has chosen Antes que cante el gallo (Before the Rooster Crows) from Ari Maniel Cruz (Puerto Rico) as winner of the Yellow Robin Award of 2016.

The jury on Antes que cante el gallo: "All of the nominees tell stories of characters with rich and unique cultural histories and speak to the great creative promise of these filmmakers. The Yellow Robin goes to a film that artfully combines the threads of sound, sight, and emotion. It is a unique take on the coming of age story incorporating elements which challenge our ideas about sexuality and intimacy within a family. The strong cast and especially our protagonist work with a well-written script which uses silence as effectively as dialogue; providing a window into the soul of our main character. Cinematography, music, and the hills of Puerto Rico are components in this rich tapestry."

The Award comes with USD 10.000 prize money, screening of the film in the Bright Future program section at the next International Film Festival Rotterdam, and participation in Cinemart.

In the Short Movies Big Stories competition the top three of the submitted short films are each screened a total of five times before the Yellow Robin Award nominees and were in competition for two prizes: the Short Movies Big Stories Award (a trip to the Netherlands to attend (part of) International Film Festival Rotterdam 2017 and a one-time screening of his film in the education program and a runner-up prize of USD 500.

Nominees were Drowning in Red from Maxine Russel, Layo from Rovendley Welvaart, both from Curaçao, and Gula (Greed) from Colombia filmmaker Oscar Orjuela. The Short Movies Big Stories Award 2016 went to Oscar Orjuela. The runner-up prize, USD 500 to Rovendley Welvaart.
