LOCAL & REGIONAL HISTORY_A journey through the ‘mundo místiko’, the mystical world created by visual artist Tony Monsanto.
Cinematographic portrait of visual artist Tony Monsanto. Born on Curaçao in 1946 into a family of Suriname parents, Monsanto grew up in the Netherlands where he studied at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and later architecture at the Technical University Delft. Since returning to Curaçao, he worked full time as an artist. His work, characterized by a brilliant mastery of classical western painting techniques, contains both direct and discreet references to Caribbean legends and Afro-Caribbean traditions. It incorporates contemporary environmental and social issues dealing with the complexity of Caribbean identity and reality.
The documentary explores his life and work, philosophy of life, and social criticism. Family and friends talk about the artist, who passed away in 2014, and accompany the viewer on a journey through the ‘mundo místiko’, the mystical world created by Tony Monsanto.
