The Florida Project (2018 Feature Film)

Sean BAKER | USA | 2017 | color | DCP | 115' | English | d.s.

In six-year-old Moonee’s eyes, Disney World’s poverty-stricken environs provide fun adventures. Shielded by childhood, the problems are beyond her comprehension. Talented amateur actors, gorgeous camera work and an amazing role for Willem Dafoe are this colourful film’s main attractions.

Halley and her 6-year-old daughter Moonee live in a motel just outside Disney World Orlando in Florida. Precocious Moonee views the poverty-stricken strip of motels and fast food outlets as colourful and exciting. The food is sweet, there are few rules and supervision isn’t required. At most, Moonee wants to keep volatile manager Bobby (Willem Dafoe, one of the few professional actors in the film) on her good side even though his frustration amuses her.

Filmmaker Sean Baker shot his previous feature Tangerine on an iPhone 5s. The Florida Project was shot on 35mm. The camera lovingly races along as Moonee and her friends tear around the motel. The editing is energetic, the tone is loud and funny. However, deep drama underlies this warm film. Moonee's youthful perspective means she can’t see the financial misery she and her mum are in.

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Willem Dafoe).

Sean BAKER (1971, USA) studied at New York University and received his BA in Film Studies. As a filmmaker, he takes the viewer close to his characters. To do this, he carries out meticulous research. For the film Tangerine, he researched transgender prostitutes for eight months, together with his co-writer. Baker takes a respectful and responsible approach to his characters, but he often neglects the rules of film. Tangerine (2015) for example, was made entirely with an IPhone. For The Florida Project (2017), he filmed in and near Walt Disney World Resort. The world premiere was in Cannes.
