Carol (2016 Feature Film)

Todd Haynes | USA | 2015 | 118 min | English | d.s.
Rich Carol and the younger Therese fall in love, but their environment is hostile. Atmospheric, upsetting drama about an impossible love affair between two women during the conservative 1950s. Actors Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara were deservedly nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

Director Todd Haynes returns to the 1950s he last masterfully brought to life in Far from Heaven. This time around, he tackles the adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt (1952). Carol tells the story of the unexpected affair between two women of different ages and social classes. Therese is a young woman in her early twenties. She meets Carol, a seductive older woman, at her job in the doll department of a department store. Carol has a daughter and is separated from her husband. When he finds out about the two women, he presents Carol with an impossible dilemma. Cameraman Ed Lachman filmed everything in Super-16, creating a dreamy realism that is augmented by the fabulous sets and costumes. Together they make the 1950s look beautiful, yet ominous. Cate Blanchett provides a magnificent performance as the ostensibly controlled Carol who is torn apart on the inside, and Rooney Mara plays the somewhat naive Therese. Both were nominated for an Oscar.

Todd HAYNES (1961) grew up in Los Angeles and studied Art and Semiotics at Brown University. He made his debut short Suicide at a very young age. Many of his films gave him critical recognition, but only since Far from Heaven has the mainstream public accepted Haynes’ sometimes controversial films, judging by the four Oscar nominations. I’m Not There was very successful with 1 nomination and 3 wins including the Special Jury Prize at Venice 2007. His last film Carol also received Oscar nominations: Cate Blanchett was nominated as Best Actress and Rooney Mara as Best Supporting Actress.
